Experience Overview

If we had to describe the Belizean pace it would be somewhere between slowly rolling waves and the inquisitive speed of a ruin explorer. Embracing just that mix of curious and chill, this nine-day itinerary will let you tour Mayan ruins, cycle around stunning islands, and enjoy plenty of time to hang out on the beach. Be speedy, or a bit sloth-like — we’ll help you discover Central America either way.

Highlights

  • Spot tropical sea life while snorkelling the world's second-largest barrier reef
  • Explore the jungle-set ruins of Tikal
  • Listen to reggae music as you walk down Caye Caulker's sandy main street

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Belize City

Arrive at any time.
There are no activities planned until an evening welcome meeting.

2

Day 2: Belize City/Flores

Cross the border into Guatemala and continue on to Flores.
Notice the difference in culture, with the heavy Mayan influence and Spanish language.

Enter Guatemala at the northeast jungle Petén region. The descendants of the Maya of Chichén Itzá migrated to the Petén area several centuries after the collapse of the great Mayan cities in the Yucatán.

3

Day 3: Flores

Enjoy a guided tour of the Tikal archaeological site. Return to Flores and choose to relax or go for a swim in Lake Petén Itzá.

4

Day 4: Flores/San Ignacio

Cross back into Belize and the town of San Ignacio, and enjoy a free afternoon to explore or choose from optional activities like a visit to the nearby ruins of Xunantunich.

5

Day 5: San Ignacio

Take a free day to choose from a long list of optional activities from San Ignacio. Opt to visit the sacred Mayan caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal, check out Barton Creek Cave, Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, or the visit the ancient ruins of Caracol or Xunantunich.

6

Day 6: San Ignacio/Caye Caulker

Travel by bus and boat to beautiful Caye Caulker, where "go slow" is the island's motto. Later, explore the island on the G Adventures-supported Bike with Purpose tour.
Enjoy tons of optional activities that will keep you busy here for days.

7

Day 7: Caye Caulker

With free time, opt to snorkel in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, or just chill out, Belizean style.

8

Day 8: Caye Caulker

Continue to explore Caye Caulker and its water or land-based activities during free time.

9

Day 9: Caye Caulker

Depart at any time.

Lots of options for each day - sometimes too many! This trip seems to have many small details that were sometimes overwhelming when being dealt with all at once.

it's an easy way to travel - the trip is planned for you, but you still have options for excursions/activities on top of that. You get to meet new people. You get a great guide.

For folks interested in organized group travel, I would highly recommend G Adventures. Their well-structured schedule and in-trip customization/flexibility made the experience a positive one

Shobhit D.,   -  Traveled, December 2023

It was my first G Adventures trip and I loved the overall experience of hotels & logistics provided by G and managed by our CEO Marlon Tajeda on the trip. The best part was the knowledge & cultural information shared by Marlon that enhanced the overall experience of travels in Belize and Tikal in Guatemala. Also, the minor details like getting cash from ATMs, what to wear/not wear for various activities thoruhgout the trip and food & restaurants recommendations provided by Marlon were on point. The only area of improvement would be maintaining a same level of hotels/accommodations throughout the trip and if new restaurants could be added to the list of recommendations. For eg., there is this new restaurant Shado Beny and Pasta del Caso in Caye Caulker, both of which are a gem of a place that could be added on the list of recommendations.

The trips we',ve taken (3 after the most recent) have been interesting, gritty and fun. Our guides have been great and we',ve seen places in the world we likely would not have seen on our own.

it's a great way to feel comfortable travelling on your own, and having opportunities to do things you might not if you planned a trip by yourself, without the support of a local guide.

Planning a trip is time consuming and stressful, navigating in countries with different languages and customs can also be difficult. Our CEO helped us find everything we wanted and negotiated fair prices. I particularly like the focus on supporting local businesses

I love meeting new people while travelling in different places. I appreciate the planning that g does to ensure the tour goes well - it makes it easier for busy people to travel. There are always lots of activities while also building in enough free time too.

removes the stress of logistics and lets you focus on the local experience. Creates an instant group that supports and encourages each other. Great trips at very reasonable prices. And every one of the 3 G Adventures trip leaders I've had over the years has been fantastic.
