Trip For You
This trip has been rated Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.   Although this is a cultural trip, some days, such as those in Petra, are long and you should be ready to expend some energy. To do the optional 850 steps up to the monastery or the climb up to the High Place of Sacrifice you should have a reasonable level of fitness. Your leader can provide you with further advice about these hikes. It is not advisable to do the High Place of Sacrifice if you suffer from vertigo as there are some very steep narrow steps and cliffs. The leader always accompanies anyone doing this option. If you don’t do the optional hikes, there is still plenty to see by wandering through the ancient city. In very rare instances where local conditions require, we may need to amend the order of the itinerary, but we will ensure that elements of the itinerary are still included and site visits are of the same duration. Ramadan is expected to run from approximately 10 March-10 April 2024 and 28 February-29 March 2025. One of the most important periods in the Islamic calendar, it is a special time to visit a Muslim country. Each evening, the streets empty as people head home to break the fast, followed by an air of festivity upon their return. Our leaders and drivers choose to work at this time so we continue to run trips; however, their energy levels may be slightly lower than normal. Many tourist sites, restaurants and shops will have an amended schedule, but your tour leader will know how to adapt the itinerary to still experience all the inclusions on this trip and maximise your experience during this special time.
Group Description
The group will generally be between four and 16 people. All departures have a tour leader, chosen for their expertise. They are fully qualified English-speaking Jordanian guides.
Eating Drinking
All breakfasts, three lunches and four dinners are included. Dinners are included at the Wadi Rum camp and Hilton Dead Sea Resort & Spa. In Amman, we include a welcome dinner at a restaurant known for its excellent Jordanian food. Dinner on the first night in Petra is included at our hotel. In Aqaba, we include sundowners from the private beach overlooking the Red Sea. When not on half board, we usually eat in local restaurants and the leader arranges bookings for those in the group who would like to join. We suggest you budget around 20 Jordanian dinars per person (US$28) per non-included meals. If you are vegetarian, please note that main meals are limited in choice; however, meze is almost always available in restaurants and is a good, filling vegetarian choice. There is a good choice of seafood available when at the Red Sea. At the Wadi Rum camp, we enjoy a traditional dinner called zarb, which is cooked underground. This consists of rice with a selection including chicken, lamb and vegetables. Vegetables are cooked separately to the meat. Alcoholic drinks: Alcohol is available in Jordan, but not widely. Many hotels do not sell alcohol but often allow it to be brought in from elsewhere. It is best to plan if you’ll want a drink, your tour leader can tell you what’s possible and may be able to arrange a stop at a supermarket or liquor store (depending on location). In Petra, the unique Cave Bar in Petra Guesthouse is open to the public. A less expensive option is the bar in the Petra Palace Hotel, which is also open to all.
Transportation
For most of this trip we use a private air-conditioned bus, with a local driver. To reach the Wadi Rum camp and to explore the surrounding desert, we use basic 4x4 vehicles, owned by the Bedouins. The vehicles are appropriate for local desert travel but may fall below normal vehicle safety standards expected on our trips. As there are no other vehicles available and as we are not travelling by road, we feel they are an adequate means of transport.

Weather Information
Spring and autumn are very popular times to visit Jordan as it is cooler, around 24C (75F) in the day and down to 8C (46F) at night. Rain is more likely, but protracted bad weather is unlikely. It is hot and dry, but not unpleasant, throughout Jordan in the summer. Daytime maximum temperatures are around 32C (89F) in Amman. Jerash temperatures are the same. Wadi Rum is around 30C (86F) on average in summer, though it can get as high as 40C (104F). At night it is usually cooler (30C/86F). In winter, it is much cooler and can get as low as 10C (50F) during the day. In the evening, it can hit freezing. There are occasions when there is rain or even snow in the desert. If weather conditions require, we may need to modify the itinerary or the camp location for your comfort and safety. Aqaba is very hot when the air is still, but there is usually a breeze. Rain is unusual but possible. The Dead Sea air temperatures vary from around 14C (57F) in winter up to 37C (98F) in summer. The water temperature doesn’t drop below 20C (68F). As with many countries in the world, seasons can go on longer than usual so it is advisable to always check the weather of the country you are travelling to a week or two before your trip so you can pack appropriately.
Spending Money
Optional excursions There are various excursions possible on this trip – the leader will provide more details on arrival. Please note that all prices are subject to change. — Petra by night: Follow the trail from the Siq to the Treasury in candlelight where you will be offered tea and traditional music by the local Bedouins 17 dinars per person (US$24). Please note, this is not possible every evening and it can get crowded at times. It is a low-key entertainment, so it is best not to go with any expectations. — Turkish bath in Petra: 22 dinars per person (US$31) — Little Petra: A smaller but still impressive version of the main Petra site. 13 dinars per person (US$19) for guided tour and transport. This is an option on the morning we travel to Aqaba. If the whole group does this option, then we check out of the hotel beforehand. — Camel rides in Wadi Rum: Camel rides provided by the local Bedouin will be possible and scheduled according to the group preferences. A trek in the desert is approximately 1hr 20min and costs 20 dinars per person (US$28). — Amman entry fees: The main sites are included in our city tour at the beginning of the trip. However, if you arrive a day early you may like to visit the King Abdullah Mosque. The entrance is 2 dinars (US$3).
Tipping
On all Exodus Premium Adventures tipping for any local support staff is included and will normally be taken care of via your tour leader (or in some cases through our local agent). So need no for any tipping kitty contributions, or to make your own tips during the trip. Our ‘included tips’ will normally cover drivers, local specialist guides, certain hotel staff, and serving staff for included meals. Amounts will be in line with the local standard. Of course, if you wish to make a further tip for some extra special service you may do so. Tips for the Tour Leader are not included and most clients will wish to tip the leader. As a guide we suggest US$55 per person for this trip. Most groups prefer to present the money to the leader at the end of the trip in an envelope. The amount is at your discretion and our suggested amount is to be used as a guideline only.

Itinerary

1
Day 1: Start Amman

Welcome to Amman, the capital of Jordan, where our adventure begins. There are free transfers to the hotel from Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) for all customers today. Please note, transfers should be booked with your sales representative at least two weeks before the tour starts. Depending on what time you arrive, you might want to make use of the pool or perhaps book yourself in for a post-flight refresher at the spa. Your expert leader will leave instructions for you at the hotel. Total drive time: 45 minutes to one hour Premium accommodation: InterContinental Amman

2
Day 2: Visit Jerash then Amman city tour

This morning we drive north to the ruined city of Jerash, known as Gerasa in ancient times, which is awash with imposing colonnades, ancient temples and theatres. This was one of the 10 wealthy, self-governing cities of the Decapolis during Roman times, and was famous throughout the Roman world for its affluent lifestyle. Buried for centuries under blown sand, Jerash is the only city of the Decapolis to have survived, with a dramatic oval forum, colonnaded main streets which remarkably have the drains still intact, two theatres and the impressive Temple of Zeus. After a good look around, we head back to Amman for an exciting city tour, where we’ll visit notable ancient sites such as the Citadel, Roman Theatre and the old city. Take in the striking views of the capital of the Kingdom of Jordan from the heady heights of the Citadel complex. This evening, we enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant and sample traditional Jordanian food. Total drive time: three hours (with stops along the way) Premium accommodation: InterContinental Amman

3
Day 3: Drive down King's Highway to Petra via Mount Nebo, Madaba and Kerak

Today we head along the King's Highway, an old trade route that connects Amman and Petra, weaving up and down huge wadis (valleys). There are several stops of interest en route, including the ancient town of Madaba, known as the city of the mosaics; the biblical Mount Nebo, where Moses was believed to have witnessed the Promised Land; and the crusader castle of Kerak, which stands on a rocky outcrop. Further south we reach the Unesco World Heritage site of Petra, the premier historical site in Jordan and one of the most outstanding ancient cities in the world. Also known as the rose-red city, Petra is a phenomenal sandstone complex of ornate palaces, temples and tombs carved into the cliffs. Your expert leader will reveal all about the history of this New Wonder of the World. Total drive time: Approximately six hours (with stops along the way) Premium accommodation: Grand Mercure Petra or Old Village Resort

4
Day 6: Explore Wadi Rum from the comfort of our luxurious desert camp

This morning there is the option to take a guided tour through the intriguing archaeological site of Little Petra or you can relax at our premium accommodation before we drive south. We enter the natural and cultural World Heritage site of Wadi Rum, where dramatic sandstone mountains rise from the sandy desert floor. This is where Lawrence of Arabia and Prince Faisal assembled the Arab tribes for the attack on Aqaba in the first world war and where sections of the epic film, Lawrence of Arabia (1962), were shot. After checking into our luxury camp, we join a thrilling, four-hour 4WD trip to the highlights of this protected area. Experience an authentic zarb dinner (cooked underground) at our Bedouin camp and relax beneath the stars around the camp fire. Total drive time: 1hr 30min to two hours Premium accommodation: Saraya luxury camp

5
Day 7: Drive to Aqaba; relax by the Red Sea

Leaving the Mars-like landscape of Wadi Rum, we head to Aqaba on the Red Sea. The city is well-known for having beautiful coral reefs. Our hotel has a private white-sand beach with direct access to the Red Sea where you can dip your toes in the water and absorb the coastal views. The rest of the day is free to relax and enjoy the facilities of this five-star hotel. We can meet for a sundowner overlooking the sea before heading out for dinner. Enjoy a taste of traditional Jordanian cuisine and sample fresh, local seafood, which is a speciality in the area. Total drive time: One hour to 1hr 30min Premium accommodation: Hyatt Regency Aqaba Ayla Resort

6
Day 8: Drive from Aqaba to the Dead Sea

Leaving Aqaba, we head to the Dead Sea, one of the most fascinating places on Earth. Enjoy free time to float in the saline waters and smother yourself in Dead Sea mud, before cooling off in one of the two infinity pools at our premium accommodation. A totally relaxing way to end your Jordan adventure. This evening there will be a memorable group dinner to celebrate your time in Jordan and say your farewells. Total drive time: four to five hours Premium accommodation: Hilton Dead Sea Hotel & Spa

7
Day 9: End Dead Sea

The tour comes to an end after one last breakfast. Hop in the arranged group transfer to the airport to make your return journey home. Or, if you’re craving more salty sea days, speak to your sales representative about extending your stay by the Dead Sea. Total drive time: one hour

Discovering countries, cultures, environments, cities, mountain ranges, deserts, coasts and jungles; exploring this amazing planet we all live on. At Exodus, we know what makes you tick when it comes to holidays. It’s a desire shared by so many others. A yearning to visit new places and come home with a real sense of what they’re all about. This means delving into local traditions, cultures, cuisine, lifestyles – anything that contributes to its unique identity. At the same time, we always remember that we are only guests. So we travel courteously and respectfully, in smaller groups to minimise our impact, to ensure that every Exodus holiday is a beneficial experience for everyone involved. We also strive to provide as much flexibility and choice as we possibly can, making it simple for you to experience a very different holiday. A magical trip - best guide EVER! We had a truly wonderful time travelling around Jordan. Our trip was really enhanced by our fabulous guide, Muayad, who made every day very special as he made huge efforts to provide us with unique insights into Jordanian life and history. It was Ramadan when we travelled and it was not easy to provide meals during the day, buy Muayad worked his magic and we had some fantastic picnic spots eating Jordanian breads, hummus and other local treats. Muayad was incredibly knowledgeable and I feel I have returned to the UK with a deeper understanding of the Jordanian culture and history. The whole trip was meticulously planned and every day had superb highlights, such as camel riding in Wadi Rum, trekking up to the Monastery at Petra, the first glimpse of the Treasury at Petra and the incredible Roman ruins at Jerash. We packed so much into a week but didn’t ever feel rushed. Most Inspirational Moment So many... eating dinner with the Jordanian family - first glimpse of the Treasury at Petra - speeding across the Wadi Rum in the back of a truck...! Thoughts on Group Leader FABULOUS. The best tour leader we could have hoped for. Muayad's scope of knowledge was huge and his enthusiasm was tangible. A wonderful guide who brought the history and culture of Jordan to life. Advice for Potential Travellers Just book it! Suggestions Have no doubt when booking this trip.... you will be so glad that you did. One of our most memorable trips and a country to which we would love to return.

Wonderful trip This is a fantastic trip, visiting many places of historical interest and trying good local food. The group leader had so much knowledge and experience that added to the holiday. Most Inspirational Moment Seeing the beautiful Treasury in Petra. Thoughts on Group Leader Muayad Mismar was an excellent guide with a seemingly endless supply of historical facts, cultural observations, up to date news and anecdotes. He engaged very well with the group. Advice for Potential Travellers We travelled in early April and it became very hot in the open areas. After a long day walking in Petra, the golf carts are a wonderful way to get back to the entrance and well worth the 15 Dinars. Suggestions Whilst not detracting from the experience, there were some discrepancies between the holiday description and our holiday experience. At Wadi Rum there was too much light from the camp to see a star filled sky, and there was no traditional music. At Aqaba, there were no "immense views across the Red Sea" from the hotel, there was no direct access to the sea, and because of the arrival and departure times, no opportunity to explore the coral reefs. An extra day in Aqaba would be wonderful. Also, I don't believe that those who walked to the High Place of Sacrifice had a Bedouin guide to accompany them.

Kingdoms of Jordan A wonderful vist to Jordan not only seeing the wll known places such as Petra, the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum, but visting other historical sites and learning about the culture and people of Jordan who were very welcoming Most Inspirational Moment Seeing the Treasurary in Petra after coming through the Siq. Our guide Muayad presented it to us in a wonderful way, and although in a way we knew what to expct it was still a wow moment. Thoughts on Group Leader We were very lucky with our brilliant guide Muayad, he imparted his knowledge of Jordans history and culture as we toured the country. He also organised meeting and eating with a local Jordanian family as well as introducing us to the food culture of Jordan. I found Muayad very caring as he notiiced my fear of heights and also helped me to clamber some of the steeper steps. Advice for Potential Travellers Jordan felt a very safe country to visit and we had no worries whilst there. also as a hearing aid wearer I would suggest wearing a head scarf whilst on the 4x4 drive in Wadi Rum as the wind can whistle around your ears. Suggestions A must see country not just for Petra but also all the other sites in Jordan

Best holiday ever Wow, what a trip. Well organised, full of interesting places and the best tour guide. Most Inspirational Moment Reaching Petra and the way our tour leader lead us to the first peek of The Treasury. Thoughts on Group Leader Moaiad was just amazing. He was so professional throughout the trip taking into consideration the guests needs and the local environment. He was passionate about his country and gave us a true experience of Jordan. Loved his sense of humour too. Advice for Potential Travellers If you want to see the highlights of Jordan feeling least like a tourist this is for you. Loved the Premium accommodation throughout for that bit of luxury.

AXM: Kingdoms of Jordan - Premium Adventure This trip was on my ‘Bucket List’, which definitely exceeded all my expectations. The kind hospitality of the Bedouin people, offering you herbal teas along the way. Visiting the night markets in Aqaba and friendliness of vendors. Driving through the Wadi Rum desert on the back of a 4×4 and experiencing a spectacular sunset. As a female traveler I felt safe walking around Amman and the rest of Jordan. Most Inspirational Moment The hike to the clifftop - sacrificial alter overlooking The Treasury and views of Petra 5-star accommodation at the Saraya Wadi Rum Camp, whilst star gazing Enjoying a sundowner, overlooking the Red Sea at our own private Aqaba beach. Floating in the Dead Sea at your leisure, in an area designated only for hotel guests. Enjoyed a home-cooked Jordanian meal, which was arranged by the Tour Leader Thoughts on Group Leader Ayyad was excellent, his attentive manner made everyone in the group feel special and well looked after. His knowledge of Jordan and delivery of information was first class. Have made a friend for life. Advice for Potential Travellers Comfortable walking boots with traction on the sole. You will find an ATM at the entrance of Petra, that will offer the best exchange rate, should you need to withdraw additional cash. Plan your clothing wardrobe to pack, according to the weather for the time of the year, as temperatures are very cold in February. Suggestions The WiFi access on the coach was a welcome surprise.

Exhausting, exhilarating, challenging, fulfilling What an incredible trip! Even though we had been lucky enough to visit Petra some ten years ago, we wanted to come back to explore the country further. Everything we did was very well organised and planned. The hotels were great as was the food. The evenings spent in local restaurants with our guide were brilliant, especially loved the evening walk round Aqaba. Jordan is a lovely country facing challenges, but with so much history! Most Inspirational Moment Seeing The Monastery. I never thought I'd be able to do the steps but I challenged myself and I'm so glad I did. The day doing thr High Place of Sacrifice was also staggering! Thoughts on Group Leader Ayyad was lovely!!! So knowledgeable but he felt like such a safe pair of hands. He said something to me when we were walking which I'll keep with me forever. Shout out too to our driver Anas....drivers often don't get a mention and he was very skilled and professional. Advice for Potential Travellers Warm clothes, layers, lots of socks and comfortable shoes. Some days walking boots will be good but there's some scrambling over rocks so I found my Sketchers we're better for that. But do it - you won't regret it! Suggestions I've come back from this trip so amazed by what I've seen and experienced, and so proud of what I've achieved. I pushed myself and I'm so very glad I did!!

Just out of this world in Jordan. Exploring the city of Amman and seeing the roman Amphitheatre and seeing the ruins in Jerash. The country is mostly sand and it is beautiful. My tour guide Abdullah is very talented. He is the best tour guide I have had and I have travel with other tour companies and had other tour guides. After leaving the city and making the way towards Petra, we drove on The King’s High way. Petra was amazing as the weather was mostly good as there was flooding and heavy rain on one of the day and I loved seeing the local sites the shops and the food are out of this world. The Red Sea and the Dead Sea was also great and I loved swimming in both of them. Wadi Rum and the Jeep Safari was awesome and inspiring. I loved the trip and would recommend it very much to everyone. Jordan is a place you would want to visit and should be on your check list. Most Inspirational Moment I loved Petra as they is so much history and culture and also Wadi Rum the star gazing was so cool, made me thinking I was floating in space surround by the stars. Thoughts on Group Leader Abdullah is funny, friendly and very thoughtful of all the group. He is aware and helps everyone. He knows so much about the culture, he could easily be a professor at a university. Best tour guide. Five stars out of five stars. Advice for Potential Travellers Beware of all the shops as they sell similar stuff and that there is not a lot of alcohol as Muslims do not drink. The weather can a bit cold and there is a lot of smoking. I am from a country where smoking is not a big thing.

Culturally rich and great variety of accommodation I always find that Exodus trips deliver more than I expect and this was no different. I booked the trip focused on Petra and the UFO camp but have found the country to be so culturally rich and interesting. Our guide – Abdullah was ridiculously knowledgeable about Jordan and it’s history and it was a pleasure to learn so much about the country. Most Inspirational Moment Seeing the Roman city at Jerash and the star gazing at UFO camp. Thoughts on Group Leader Our guide - Abdullah was ridiculously knowledgeable about Jordan and it’s history and it was a pleasure to learn so much about the country. He adapted wherever possible to suit the groups needs/wishes. He had a great sense of humour and the trip would not have been anywhere near as good without him. Advice for Potential Travellers The weather is more varied than I packed for. Make sure you pack for both warm and cooler temperatures and also some evening wear. Suggestions The time in the mini bus travelling is long at some legs. Be prepared.

Jennifer Rock   -  Traveled, December 2022

Adventures in Jordan This was my first adventure with Exodus Travels (though I have traveled multiple times with a similar small group adventure travel company) and overall I was quite happy with everything. I chose this tour over other tours of Jordan offered by other companies for a few key reasons. Firstly, the premium accommodations used, secondly, that it had two days in Petra, and lastly, that it visited Aqaba. I have some feedback related to these points. Though I was quite satisfied with most of the hotels, I and most of the group were quite disappointed with the rooms at Old Village Petra and felt we’d been duped. The picture of the room shown on the website in no way reflects the actual rooms we stayed in which were much more basic. And a little research found that there is only one such room at the resort so a group of 16 would never be able to all have such a room. Please change the picture advertised to reflect the true accommodation provided. As for Aqaba, I was disappointed to hear from our leader that there would be nothing to see if we snorkelled off the beach at our hotel. That was the one thing I wanted to do in Aqaba, snorkel in the Red Sea. Muayad told us about a beach south of Aqaba we could go to independently that had excellent snorkelling just off the beach. Those of us that chose to go were so happy he told us about it and wished we could have gone back the next day. I also found I would have loved to have had more time in Aqaba to walk around the city and enjoy the hotel. I think this could be facilitated by going from Petra to Wadi Rum to Aqaba rather than Petra to Aqaba to Wadi Rum then back via Aqaba to reach the Dead Sea. It would result in more time in Wadi Rum, more time in Aqaba and more time in Dead Sea. That might be my one real criticism of the tour is that it felt rushed and besides Petra, just not enough time in each destination. Most Inspirational Moment The wonder of Petra. The vastness of Wadi Rum. The warmth and hospitality of the Jordanian people. Thoughts on Group Leader Muayad was a great leader, extremely knowledgeable, organized, generous, helpful, and even organized a couple delicious and memorable group meals. A homemade meal at a local family's home in Wadi Musa and a Mansaf and Kunafa meal at a restaurant in Aqaba. He kept saying "hospitality is our middle name". I think it might be his first. Advice for Potential Travellers Be prepared for a fast paced week. Be prepared for a lot of walking and climbing to fully explore Petra. It's an exhausting couple days but so worth it! Eat as much Jordanian food as you possibly can.

Culture Great trip but very very busy. Arrive at hotel at 1.30 am and then an 8.30 start the following morning. Then 3 consecutive early morning starts and long-upto 13 hour days. Sites visited are all great but not really any opportunities for downtime or to use the hotel facilities. Most Inspirational Moment Wadi rum is probably the best bit but enjoyed snorkelling in the Red Sea, which was an extra for us Thoughts on Group Leader Really good and helpful, very well informed. There was an expectation we would want to do everything but did accept we needed some down time from the hectic schedule Advice for Potential Travellers This is a full on trip. Not sure it can really be described as leisurely. Suggestions If it was 2 days longer I think this would be a perfect way to see Jordan

Jordan Holiday We had a wonderful holiday in Jordan – lots of interesting things to see, an excellent tour leader, a high standard of very comfortable accommodation. Most Inspirational Moment There were many very memorable moments but coming out of the Syk at Petra and seeing the Treasury stands out Thoughts on Group Leader Our group leader, Mouayad, was brilliant and was a key factor in the holiday being so enjoyable. He is very knowledgeable about the history of Jordan and the locations we visited, speaks very good English, made sure that we had good local food experiences and just generally couldn't have looked after us better. Advice for Potential Travellers Getting cash from ATMs is expensive in terms of fees charged so would advise bringing cash or pre-loaded cards. Suggestions Would thoroughly recommend this trip.
