After checking into your accommodation, join your leader for a short walk through the jungle to your traditional Amazonian archery lesson. There, you'll discover how the local indigenous community craft and use their bow and arrow. You and your family can have a go at hitting the targets before heading back to the lodge for a hearty dinner. After dark we'll return to the river by boat in search of caimans and other nocturnal creatures.

If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of an endangered river wolf (otter)! Head back to the lodge for a rest, play and some lunch. This afternoon you'll visit a traditional medicine garden where the shaman of the community will introduce you to some plants used for healing. You and your family will have the opportunity to go to the laboratory and observe how the medicines are prepared. After dinner tonight your leader will take you on a walking tour in search of insects, amphibians, tarantulas, bats, birds and (the shy) armadillo. Listen out for the sounds of the jungle and notice the stars peeking through the trees.

You might like to take a walk around the delightful old city, visiting the Inca walls of the Plaza de Armas or some of the many fine churches around town, or grab dinner and relax with your new friends. Whatever you choose, be sure to take it slow as you adjust to the city's high altitude (3450 m).

Learn about the significance of music and art in Peruvian culture and history, visit their home and have a go at playing traditional drums, strings and wind instruments. You'll also be shown how to make and play your own zampona, a traditional panpipe, which you can take home with you. The rest of the day is yours to explore. Perhaps head to the local market and pick up some pastries for a picnic lunch. Or, if you're keen to brush up on your knowledge of Peruvian history before visiting Machu Picchu, why not check out some of Cusco’s excellent museums? This morning, drive through the Sacred Valley. Known as Wilcamayo to the Incas, the valley has been a source of livelihood for the locals for hundreds of years. You’ll see maize crops covering the terraced walls and the sacred river beneath. Stop in at the Andean community of Ocotuan, located near the beautiful Piuray lagoon. There, you’ll learn about traditional textile techniques and how local women are using them to support their families. Your kids will also be able to feed llamas, alpacas and guinea pigs. Sit down for a lunch with the community, then continue to the Maras Salt Ponds, where Inca built terraces to harvest the salt from the springs. Next is a stop at Moray, where Inca built huge circular terraces to plant different crops at the optimum altitude. Finally, continue to the town of Ollantaytambo. To finish off the day’s adventures, you might like to check out the town’s fascinating archaeological site – ancient remnants of an Inca city with views over the present-day settlement.
Included Activities:
- Ollantaytambo - Sacred Valley - weaving demonstration
Accommodation:
- Tunupa Lodge Hotel or similar (Number of Nights: 1)
Start early this morning and board a train towards Aguas Calientes, a modern town in the cloud forest at the foot of Machu Picchu. The train ride will offer some unbelievable views of the Andean scenery. Then, take a short bus ride up the winding road to Machu Picchu. The ‘Lost City of the Incas’ was built around 1440 AD as a country retreat for Inca nobility, but there’s evidence that the land had been a sacred Inca site for much longer. It’s true purpose may always be a mystery since no records of the complex exist. Explore the upper terrace with your family first, then take a tour of the ruins with a local guide, learning more about these 200 or so houses and temples. Catch the bus back into Aguas Calientes and enjoy some spare time to have lunch and a look around. Later, board the train back to Ollantaytambo and perhaps join your group for an optional dinner.
Included Activities:
- Machu Picchu - Entrance and guided tour
Accommodation:
- Tunupa Lodge Hotel or similar (Number of Nights: 1)
Enjoy a slow start to the morning with your family, then hop on a transfer back to Cusco. Arrive just after midday, and enjoy a final free afternoon. You might like to take the family to the stunning Plaza de Armas – the heart of the city, flanked by ornate churches – or the Coricancha Temple, once the most important temple in the Inca Empire. Or, you could simply take the time to sit back and relax. Later, you might like to join your group for an optional farewell dinner.
Optional Activities:
- Ollantaytambo - Archaelogical site entrance and guided tour - Free
Accommodation:
- Taypikala Cusco Hotel or similar (Number of Nights: 1)

We travelled to Peru as a family of 4 (children aged 6 and 9). There is a good reason why this trip receives 5* reviews and we fully agree with that! A magical trip with a wonderful guide (Paul) that we will never forget.

Our family tour of Peru was amazing. Our guide Paulie went above and beyond to make the trip magical. The trip was really well organised and run and our two children (7&9) had the best time. We would recommend this trip time and again!

My 83 year old mother attended this family tour. We all had a great time. Most importantly, though she was able to do just about everything, her pace was slow. Our tour director made sure she had the time and support she needed to enjoy every aspect of this trip. Mauchu Picchu is evert but as wonderful and amazing as you think it is. If Interpid made it possible for my mom to do this trip you can do it too!

This was my 2nd Intrepid trip. Both were excellent. A distinctive feature is connecting with local people and learning something of their life and history. Even better is sharing this with children in places they could never see otherwise.

A great trip to take with kids. There is no way I could have handled all the logistics around multiple stops alone and still enjoyed the trip. . Luckily I didn’t have to, because Intrepid planned a great itinerary, and our guide Carmen was amazing! I’d definitely recommend this trip.

This trip was a once in a lifetime memorable experience! So glad we did this trip with Intrepid. I can't rave enough about the amazing education we received on the history of this beautiful country, and its culture, ecology, language, and native people. Our 6 year old had a blast and so did her parents! All the experiences and destinations were made exceptional by our wonderful tour leader, guide, interpretor, Luiz G!

We traveled on a family trip to Peru. I could not recommend this trip more. It catered for everyone and we had a wonderful time learning, seeing Peru and understanding why the Peruvian people are justifiably proud of their country.

Peru is a beautiful country that everyone should see at least once in their life. The nature is phenomenal. You get to explore and learn how the people live ( for example visit a local community). Even with the ages gaps, as a teen i had so much fun and made great memories. 100% recommend :)

The Peru family trip exceeded my expectations! We traveled with our 6 & 8 year old, and our Trip Leader, Sally L, was above and beyond remarkable from start to finish. The itinerary was varied, kept our kids engaged and was a wonderful choice for our kiddos first international trip! What a wonderful country and experience! Note to be prepared for hydration and altitude and cautious with food/water.

We went on this tour with our boys (8 and 10). They were the perfect age for it. It was great to see alot of Peru in a short time! There were early wake ups but definitely worth it! The Amazon lodge is remote so expect to "rough it" a little bit but the rest of the accommodations were very comfortable. My family of 4 did get split up into 2 rooms (next door) but we enjoyed. Our tour leader Sally was beyond AMAZING and literally made our trip! She took such good care of us and made our trip stress free! We also felt very safe in Peru and would not hesitate to go back!
