Experience Overview
The Kingdom of Jordan is the perfect place to combine a cycling tour with some of the best sites in the Middle East. This biking trip takes us through olive groves and hilltop villages in the north, while further south we head along desert roads where the communities are sparse and nomadic and the landscape vast and spectacular. If the cycling alone isn’t enough to entice you, perhaps the Unesco-badged Petra, a night under the stars in the Wadi Rum desert, or a float in the Dead Sea will tempt you to visit this fascinating country.

Trip For You
This trip is classified Road and Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.
Five days of cyclingAverage 28mi (45km) per day100 percent vehicle support
The tour centres on the Jordan Valley using mostly paved roads, which are generally in a good state of repair, with some pot-holed sections. The first two riding days involve several descents on paved roads. In places, there may be some loose stones so care needs to be taken. Some of the descents are quite steep, but the leader can assist you if you are not confident and the trip is fully vehicle-supported should you decide you want a day off riding.
The fourth day of cycling is the longest and most challenging in terms of terrain, but it is also the most spectacular. There are several ascents and one reasonably long and quite steep descent. This day is a fantastic day of riding but it is important you have a reasonably good level of fitness and keep well hydrated in the warmer months. On the whole, the cycling days are quite short and, other than Day 6, you will not be cycling all day. The trip is well balanced with the cultural sites and these are as much the focus as the cycling. The day in Petra can be long and tiring but well worth the effort.
To do the optional 850 steps up to the Monastery or the climb up to the High Place of Sacrifice you should have a reasonably good level of fitness. Your leader can provide you with further advice about these hikes. It is not advisable to do the High Place of Sacrifice if you suffer from vertigo as there are some very steep narrow steps and cliffs. While camping in Wadi Rum, please be aware that the plumbed toilets and showers are basic and hot water may be limited. Our private Exodus camp is, however, often mentioned as a highlight of the trip for many of our guests. In very rare instances, where local conditions require, we may need to amend the order of the itinerary but we will ensure that all the elements are still included and site visits are of the same duration.
During winter, Jordan can experience low temperatures so it is really important you are adequately equipped for the cycling and the night in the desert during this time. During summer it can get very hot and you will need to ensure you are hydrated and have appropriate sun protection. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.
Ramadan is expected to run from approximately 10 March-10 April 2024 and 28 February-29 March 2025. One of the most important periods in the Islamic calendar, it is a special time to visit a Muslim country. Each evening, the streets empty as people head home to break the fast, followed by an air of festivity upon their return. Our leaders and drivers choose to work at this time so we continue to run trips; however, their energy levels may be slightly lower than normal. Many tourist sites, restaurants and shops will have an amended schedule, but your tour leader will know how to adapt the itinerary to still experience all the inclusions on this trip and maximise your experience during this special time.
Eating Drinking
All breakfast, two lunches, and one dinner in Wadi Rum are included. While staying in hotels we usually eat in local restaurants and on some occasions the leader will take those who wish to a restaurant for a meze-style meal. A meze is made of lots of small dishes, eaten as a starter before a larger main course – a great way to taste lots of different regional foods in one sitting. These allow fast service and a good quality of food for the group and usually cost 10-15 Jordanian dinars per person. If you are vegetarian, please note that main meals are limited in choice; however meze is almost always available in restaurants and is a good, filling option. There is also a good choice of seafood available at the Red Sea. Meals are nearly always served with bread or in wraps so we recommend bringing some of your own snacks if your diet is more limited.
Alcohol is available in Jordan, but not widely. Many hotels do not sell alcohol but will often allow it to be brought in from elsewhere. It is best to plan ahead if you’ll want a drink, your tour leader will be able to tell you what’s possible and may be able to arrange a stop at a supermarket or liquor store (depending on location). In Petra, the unique Cave Bar in Petra Guesthouse is open to the public. A less expensive option is the bar in the Petra Palace Hotel which is also open to all.
Transportation
The support vehicle will carry all your luggage and personal belongings. The vehicle will follow the riders all of the time, allowing you to cycle as much or as little as you like. For most of this trip we use one air-conditioned mini- or midi-bus depending on group size, with local drivers. These will sometimes be four-wheel drive and occasionally we will use two vehicles for the group. In Wadi Rum, we use Bedouin four-wheel drive vehicles. These Bedouin vehicles are not up to the standards we are used to in the UK. As there are no other vehicles available and as we are not travelling by road we feel that they are adequate for the job.

Weather Information
Spring and autumn are very popular in Jordan as it is cooler, around 24C (75C) in the day and down to 8C (46F) at night. Rain is more likely, however, protracted bad weather is unlikely. It is hot and dry, but not unpleasant, throughout Jordan in the summer. Daytime maximum temperatures are around 32C (90F) in Amman. Jerash temperatures are the same.
Wadi Rum on average in summer is around 30C (86F) though it can get as high as 40C (104C). At night it is usually around 30C (86F). In winter, it is much cooler and can get as low as 10C (50F) during the day. In the evening it is around freezing point. There are occasions when there is rain or even snow in the desert. If weather conditions require it we may need to modify the itinerary or the camp location for your comfort and safety. Aqaba is very hot when the air is still, but there is usually a breeze. Rain is unusual but possible. The Dead Sea air temperatures vary from around 14C (57F) in winter up to highs around 37C (99F) in summer months. The water temperature however doesn’t drop below 20C (68F). As with many countries in the world, seasons can go on longer than usual so it is advisable to always check the weather of the country you are travelling to a week or two before your trip so you can pack appropriately.
Spending Money
We would advise a budget of around 400 dinars (US$560) to cover everything, including all food and optional excursions. At the beginning of the week, the leader will suggest that he collects 20-25 dinars per person to provide snacks and juice during the cycling, extra water and five lunches that are not included. This is often the best way to do this so you don’t need to worry about trying to find shops to buy things yourself. However, there is absolutely no obligation, so if you would prefer to bring your own snacks or arrange this yourself then please let the leader know.
Optional Excursions (approximate costs, depending on group sizes)
There are various excursions possible on this trip – the leader will provide more details on arrival. Please note that all prices are subject to change.
— Jerash entry fees: 10 dinars (US$14) per person. — Petra by night: Follow the trail from the Siq to the Treasury in candlelight where you will be offered tea and traditional music by the local Bedouins – approximately 17 dinars (US$24) per person. Please note, this is not possible every evening and it can get crowded. — Turkish bath in Petra: 22 dinars (US$31) per person. — Camel rides in Wadi Rum: camel rides provided by the local Bedouins will be possible on the morning of Day 8. A trek from the camp to the local village will take approximately 1hr 20min and will be 20 dinars (US$28) per person. — Archeological site at Madaba: 2 dinars (US$3) per person. — Amman entry fees: Citadel 3 dinars (US$4.20) per person, theatre 2 dinars (US$3) per person, King Abdulla Mosque 2 dinars (US$3) per person.
Tipping
Our local staff are paid fairly for their work with Exodus. However, while tipping may not be common in your home country, in Jordan it is part of the culture and is generally expected within tourism and many other areas of Jordanian life. We have given guidance in US dollars below, but tipping is best done in the local currency (Jordanian dinars).
For tipping your bike leader, mechanic, driver, hotel staff and other local staff, we recommend the use of a tipping kitty. Your leader can advise on the amount, as a guide, expect it to be US$60 for this trip. This kitty can be placed in the hands of one of the group members to look after and the leader will advise where it is appropriate to tip. If preferred, however, the leader can manage this for the group. The kitty is there to ease confusion and embarrassment by not knowing how much or how little to tip.
Most clients also wish to tip their Tour Leader and as a guide we suggest US$40 per person for this trip. Most groups prefer to present the money to the leader at the end of the week in an envelope. The amount is at your discretion and our suggested amount is to be used as a guideline only.

Hotels and a Bedouin desert campOn this cycling adventure in Jordan, we use a range of hotels and spend one night in a private Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum – an unforgettable experience. Below are the accommodations we typically use. Amman: Larsa Hotel (nights 1 and 8) Our first and final accommodation is usually the Larsa Hotel, around a 30-minute drive from Queen Alia International Airport. Locally rated as a three-star, it has some welcome amenities, including an outdoor swimming pool, sauna and hot tub. There’s also a restaurant, where we eat breakfast, plus a bar. Madaba: Black Iris Hotel (night 2) Run by the Al Sawalha family, the two-star Black Iris is our base in Madaba, well located as it’s just a short walk from the town centre. If you do explore, consider visiting St George's Church, home to a historically significant sixth-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. It's less than 10 minutes' walk away. Wadi Musa, near Petra: Hotel (nights 3-5) We spend three nights in Wadi Musa, the town adjacent to Petra. Demand for rooms near Petra is very high; over the years, we have built relationships with several accommodations, which allows us to secure spots even during peak season. The hotels are well located. Some are within walking distance of the main entrance to the Red Rose City, others are no more than a 10-minute transfer away. Places we stay include Edom Hotel, Petra Plaza, Petra Palace, Amra Palace (above) and La Maison among others. Aqaba: Lacosta Hotel (night 6) In the heart of modern Aqaba, the four-star Lacosta Hotel is within easy reach of shops, restaurants and the Red Sea. The rooms come with furniture and beds from the Middle East, while the hotel also has a gym and restaurant. Wadi Rum: Private Bedouin camp (night 7) Used exclusively by our groups, this permanent Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum is a highlight for many travellers. We sleep in traditional tents sheltered by rugged stone cliffs and enjoy the warm hospitality of our Bedouin hosts. In the evening, they serve us a zarb dinner, cooked underground in the traditional manner, while the rest of the night is typically spent around the campfire, chatting and sharing an unforgettable experience. Worth knowing Single supplements are available for this trip; however, they cannot be guaranteed at Wadi Rum. Please enquire at the time of booking for details and up-to-date prices.Demand for accommodation in Wadi Musa (Petra) is high; this can create problems with hot water and plumbing. In general, the accommodation is more basic compared to the rest of Jordan. The star rating in Jordan is quite different to what you may expect at home. Sometimes we use less centrally located hotels in the interests of comfort.

Itinerary
Welcome to Amman, the capital of Jordan, where our adventure begins. There are free transfers to the hotel from Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) for all customers today. Please note, transfers should be booked with your sales representative at least two weeks before the tour starts. Accommodation: Larsa Hotel (or similar)
After an initial briefing, we transfer by bus for approximately 45 minutes to the ancient city of Jerash. Known in Roman times as Gerasa, Jerash is one of the best-preserved examples of a Roman provincial town in the Middle East. It is a vast site with incredible ruins that enable you to almost visualise Roman life there, from the dramatic chariot races to the everyday bartering along the colonnaded streets. After a couple of hours absorbing the atmosphere of this incredible site, we return to the bus for a short transfer to the beginning of our ride, having lunch en route. When we arrive we will be introduced to the cycling team and our bikes. This afternoon we will cycle for approximately 3hr 30min through the foothills of the Jordan Rift Valley. This is the most fertile region in the country and also the most populated. We will wind our way down quiet roads and through small villages taking in the landscapes. The cycling is on good roads and much of the time you will be descending. In places, there may be some loose gravel that you will need to watch out for and there is one fairly long ascent. You will be briefed about the ride before you set off and the support vehicles will always be on hand. At the end of the ride we will leave the bikes for the day and transfer to Madaba, the City of Mosaics. The bus journey will take approximately two hours. There are several nice restaurants in Madaba, plus cafes and shops selling excellent baklava. Accommodation: Black Iris Hotel (or similar)
This morning we will wake up in Madaba, the City of the Mosaics. Madaba is the most important Christian centre in Jordan and best-known for its Byzantine mosaics. The most important of these is the sixth-century mosaic of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, which covers the floor of the Greek Orthodox church of St George. This morning we can marvel at its detail and natural colour. We then have a short transfer out of the town centre to be reunited with our bikes. Today's ride starts with a 4.3mi (7km) mild ascent up Mount Nebo, reputedly the burial site of Moses. We take a pitstop at the top for a spectacular view over the valley below. From here it's a fantastic descent to the shores of the Dead Sea. Parts of this descent are quite steep but support will be at hand and you can take your time. We follow the coast on a smooth, paved surface to Suwaima where we can change and take a float in the waters. After a shower, it's back on the bus for the long drive south (approximately three hours) along the Kings Highway towards Petra. In many places, the route is spectacular and there will be a couple of stops to admire the view on the way. Accommodation: Standard hotel – see accommodation section for more detail
The so-called Red Rose City was hidden for centuries until the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1812. It was founded by the Nabateans, an Arab tribe that arrived here in the sixth century BCE. Building at Petra began in the third century BCE and continued through the Roman period, financed by taxes levied on the desert caravans. Two features of Petra are unique: firstly, it is a city made defensible by being built down a series of chasms, rather than on a hilltop. Secondly, it is built directly into the rock – beautiful red-and-yellow sandstone carved into the most impressive facades, which glow in the sunlight. During our time in Petra we will have the opportunity to explore the site from all angles. We will walk down the narrow Siq, where a sandstone chasm rises 260ft (80m) either side of us and reveals El Khazneh (the Treasury) as we reach its end. There will also be an opportunity to explore the higher caves and the High Place of Sacrifice for a fantastic panorama of the whole site. At ground level, we pass the houses and tombs of the rich citizens, and the amphitheatre. A long walk beyond the centre is El Deir (the Monastery) with its superb facade topped by a huge urn. The Monastery is set in a more remote location of the site and there is the option to climb around 800 steps to reach it, but it is well worth it. Accommodation: Standard hotel – see accommodation section for more detail
In the morning we cycle to the north of the main city to Little Petra and the Siq Al-Barid. A classical temple stands guard outside the miniature siq, which is believed to have been an important suburb to the city of Petra itself. The narrow file, only some 1,148ft (350m) long, is crammed with triclinia, water channels and cisterns. Of particular note are the remains of painted frescoes on plaster dating from the first century CE, which are to be found in one of the biclinia. Overnight in Petra. Accommodation: Standard hotel – see accommodation section for more detail
It's an early start today to avoid the heat for our first real desert experience. After a short transfer to Tayba village, we begin riding mostly on paved surfaces to Ar-Rajif. The road cuts through traditional Bedouin territory and is a seasonal stop for the nomadic shepherds of south Jordan so the chance of a local tea break is high. The road is in a good state of repair, with some sections having been recently resurfaced. However, parts are quite heavily potholed and there is a chance that sand and stones have blown across the road and make for a loose surface, so care should be taken. We head into the desert and follow the road down to Gharandal via Dilagha to Wadi Araba. There are a few ascents and descents and it is our longest and hardest day of riding. However, it is also the most spectacular and rewarding. The road takes you on an amazing journey through the desert and makes for a very satisfying day of riding. This day is all about the cycling allowing us to immerse ourselves in the landscape. After our desert crossing, it's a short drive to Aqaba on the Red Sea. Accommodation: Lacosta Hotel (or similar)
This morning we have free time to lounge on the beach, swim, or snorkel. The transport and entrance to one of the private beaches is included in your trip. The hire of snorkelling equipment is extra to be paid on the day. In the early afternoon, we will transfer out of town for around 45 minutes and then we will get on the bikes for the last time. This ride will take us into Wadi Rum on a relatively flat desert road. The desert scenery today is quite different to that experienced yesterday and will evoke a sense of more recent history than what we have been experiencing until now. This is where Lawrence of Arabia and Prince Faisal assembled the Arab tribes for the attack on Aqaba in the first world war and also where sections of the film Lawrence of Arabia (1962) were shot. Tonight we will experience Bedouin hospitality with a traditional meal, sweet tea and desert camping in goat-hair tents. We will be able to contemplate our week of adventure as we gaze up at the star-lit sky, warmed by a fire. If you like you can pull your mattress outside and sleep under the stars. Accommodation: private Bedouin camp
After breakfast we take a 4x4 into the desert for around two hours. Following lunch, surrounded by the vastness of the desert and towering rocky outcrops, we transfer back to Amman, a journey of approximately four hours with a stop en route. Accommodation: Larsa Hotel (or similar)
Breakfast marks our final meal, an excellent chance to reminisce about an adventure packed with excitement. To make your return journey home easier, there’s a free shared transfer back to the airport.

Fantastic trip - highly recommended This was the most amazing trip. Well organised from the moment we landed in Amman. The wonderful sites we saw were enhanced by the fantastic cycle routes we took. The cycling was as described – so in the main downhill through beautiful rural countryside. The roads very very good and the support team exceptional. There were a couple of really steep climbs in parts which i struggled with especially in the heat so I took the support option and out my bike on the back of the truck and rejoined the tour at the top. The sights we saw en route would!not have been possible if we had been on a bus. The hotel s were good quality. We would thoroughly recommend the trip Most Inspirational Moment Petra was a very emotional experience - it has been on our bucket list for so long. The night in the desert was amazing and Jerash was fantastic . In reality every day was different and wonderful. Thoughts on Group Leader Sami was our tour leader and Yousef and Lloyd our cycle leaders, Sami was very good and knowledgeable. Lloyd has to get a special mention - he was funny and knowledgeable and his English was very good so we had long conversations with him. He was very encouraging on the hills and we felt very safe cycling with him Advice for Potential Travellers Book it you won’t regret it. Be aware that the recommended tip kitty amount is based on a full trip if (as we were) you are a smaller group you will pay more. We ended up being a group of 2 so paid significantly more to enable meaningful tips. Go a day early and have a look round Amman - some interesting sights. Suggestions Tourist numbers are low currently due to the Israel situation this was compounded by Amman closing the airport for 12 hours which unfortunately meant that all other travellers were turned back or redirected whilst in the air. Whilst people on other trips came a day later for some reason no-one on our trip did. This meant there was just the two of us. This did not impact on the tour quality however we did miss the group dynamics .

A ride through Jordans countryside and history This trip includes 5 days of moderate cycling, much of it downhill, with a few ups to test the keen cyclists and walking tours of some of Jordans best historic sights. Most Inspirational Moment Walking through Petra and surrounding hills on a warm spring day, followed by a day of cycling on a very quiet road descending from Petra to Aqaba on the Red Sea coast. Thoughts on Group Leader Both ourgroup leader and cycle guide who worked very well together, focused on ensuring we had a safe and enjoyable trip. Advice for Potential Travellers Read the trip notes carefully and make sure you are cycle fit for your trip. Suggestions Obviously, just at the moment tourist numbers are way down in Jordan meaning it is very pleasant to visit the uncrowded historic sites. At no point during our tour did we feel unsafe or threatened by events going on in the wider region

Outstanding holiday This trip was outstanding throughout – very well organised prior to leaving and kept fully updated, and with continuous excellent organisation and service throughout the trip from Mikhled, our local contact and guide for the trip. All days were very well scheduled and were very well planned in advance, with our guide continually liaising with the cycle team, support bus, police in attendance, and with all snacks and lunches available on schedule. Mikhled, our guide, was also extremely knowledgeable on all sites visited and had obviously studied them in considerable detail. He was also very well trained in presentation techniques, ensuring we were given all necessary information while avoiding overloading us, but still being able to respond to any queries. We had a great introduction to local culture, with Mikhled advising on and accompanying us on evening meal trips, and also introducing us to and liaising with a variety of local people who were very happy to share their life and experiences with us. Most Inspirational Moment Very hard to pick select, as all sites visited gave us a detailed and informed insight on a wide variety of experiences. Petra was an obvious highlight, and was far more extensive than I had expected. Wadi Rum was beautiful and peaceful - and additionally for us as, after our daughter's partner asked Mikhled for advice, they became engaged in the Bedouin camp, in the desert, under a full moon. Thoughts on Group Leader Mikhled is the best group leader I have met! He is extremely knowledgeable about all the sites visited, and continued providing advice during the bus journeys on the areas passed through. He is very proud of his heritage (Jordanian Bedouin) and was very happy to share detailed knowledge of his lifestyle as requested. He also appeared to have a wide range of local contacts throughout the trip who he encouraged us to befriend and interact with, while liaising as required. I am also very impressed with his dedication to his group - although being with us throughout, I became aware that he was also in constant liaison with Exodus, and with all support personnel (cycle team, drivers, police, accommodation and meals providers). He also fully managed on our behalf the ongoing daily expenses including appropriate tips - all done transparently and very efficiently, removing and doubt or embarrassment from us. Advice for Potential Travellers Trust your Exodus group leader. Also trust Exodus prior to your trip - they have excellent local people on the ground who will safely advise on and manage the trip. It was very disheartening to see the effects on the local people of extensive tour cancellations, apparently due to concerns of the Israel/Gaza situation, which was very distant and had minimal effect on us (just a relatively mild heightened security) Suggestions Cycling days on this trip did include some extensive downhill riding which had the potential to be relatively fast and required confidence. We were at the rear of the group, however the cycle leader fully accommodated slower riders, including a number of 'catch-up' breaks to allow regrouping. He was also very capable and (impressively) was fully able to cycle between both ends of the group! For slower riders - there is no cause for concern - the cycle leader has to lead (with in our trip an advance marked police car presence), and at the rear was the cycle mechanic's van and the tour bus. On one day the group extended a bit and the tour bus took up a mid station which gave safe control along the length of the group. There was also a willingness to allow tired (or unwell) people to take the bus, and rejoin the cycling group whenever required.

Lynne Bateman - Traveled, November 2023
AMAZING! First of all, this is an AMAZING trip. It is perfectly designed to have the right amount of activity, sights, experiences and cycling. There’s downtime, there’s bike rides, there’s not too long in the coach, there’s swimming and hammam and sights and I really appreciated three nights in the same hotel in Petra. I had never been on a cycling holiday before and so I have a few things to say about that! I cycle around my home town a lot and go to the gym so I kinda thought I would be fine. And I was fine, BUT what I wasn’t prepared for were the steep downhills! So that is what I would like to warn people about. If you are not a confident cyclist and if you are scared going fast downhill, then be warned, there is a LOT of that! Here is my breakdown of the cycling. Everything else was pretty much PERFECT! Obviously, we pretty much all got sick! And our cycle guide was pretty useless, but apart from that…! DAY TWO [first day of cycling]. Got our bikes, our cycle guide Iz, zoomed off downhill along a major road, without any introduction. I found this a really challenging first day. There was no gentle introduction to the roads, off we went! There was a mix of downhill and flat, but the pace was crazily fast. Things settled down on day three, but I thought the guide was really rubbish on this first day and there was no pacing at all. He was monosyllabic anyway, but I was at the back the whole time and he really didn’t care to check in! Our guide eventually had a go at him and he did token checks on us, but not impressed! DAY THREE gentle ride to Nebo and then we had to go down the windy highway for ages. I was dreading it, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought and actually better than yesterday! The pace was much better. The last part of day was a flat, hot slog along a motorway [!] to the Dead Sea. DAY FIVE Pleasantly undulating! My favourite day of cycling. Little Petra was fab too! DAY SIX I was of course sick by this point. The big bad long day! There are maybe two super steep sections and maybe two long ascents, but it was definitely a great day’s ride. Iz didn’t want to tell us about the ride, for some reason, but he eventually described it as section one downhill, section two undulating, section three flat, and that’s broadly true. DAY SEVEN needed a bag for swimming, a bag for wadi rum camp ,and a bag for the bus. So that was a mental challenge!! Today’s ride was another flat, hot slog, but great. I’m starting to think I actually prefer undulating! At one point the guide, Iz, told me to get a move on! Wadi Rum completely exceeded expectations. Loved the camels. Loved the stargazing. Loved everything – food, culture, the sights, the hotels, it was all great. I give this trip 10/10 for experience. Consider if the cycling is the right level for you, it WAS the right level for me, but I was always at the back because of the scary downhills, but i’m SO GLAD I did it! Also, our group was just gorgeous. Most Inspirational Moment Stars at Wadi Rum, floating in Dead Sea, the first glimpse of Petra, Little Petra which I adored, the camels and the dogs and the kittens... hang on - did you only want one?! Thoughts on Group Leader Our group leader was adequate. We know he did a lot of sorting out behind the scenes, but he was also pretty tired. Advice for Potential Travellers Bring bags for various packing that's needed! I expected Wadi Rum to be freezing at night [nov] and it wasn't so I'd overpacked. Spent about £275 in extras, including hammam and camel ride and £75 to leader for tips and snacks. Suggestions I just think this is a perfectly designed trip, the balance is perfect and the sights are MORE THAN AMAZING

Jordan Exceeded Expectations An incredible trip, would highly recommend. So many highlights it’s difficult to list them all! Most Inspirational Moment Petra and Wadi Rum exceeded high expectations, with the right amount of time spent in both places. Jerash was an unexpected hidden treasure. The day in the desert of watching the sunset, having a traditional ground cooked meal and sitting by the campfire under the stars was unforgettable. Our group was great fun and this really enhanced the experience. Spending an evening in the home of a local family in Petra was a unique experience. Thoughts on Group Leader We learnt so much from Mikhled about the culture, history, education and politics of Jordan. We left with a far better understanding of the country. We travelled during the end of Ramadan, and really appreciated Mikhled having to spend Eid with us when I'm sure he would have rather been with his family. He dealt with a medical emergency very efficiently and also went the extra mile to make my birthday special. Advice for Potential Travellers In terms of clothing, normal cycling gear was perfectly acceptable (including female cycling shorts and tshirts) just have a wrap and some trousers ready on the bus for when you visit any towns. Using wraps as head coverings wasn't essential from a religious perspective, but was a very good way of protecting from the sun and heat. I wouldn't bother with the Hamman in Petra, it was okay but nothing special. Suggestions We didn't get the chance to see Amman as our flight arrived after midnight and there was no time during the evening of our last day to visit the old town. We'd suggest adding a day to your trip either at the beginning or the end to be able to see Amman

Cycling in Jordan Excellent and well organised trip. Bikes in good condition and relatively new. Daily cycling a little less than several of us expected but the level (3 – moderate) is appropriate. Suitable for a keen weekend cyclist, not necessarily someone looking to do lots of miles per day. That said, some downhill sections were long and difficult. Traffic not a problem. Throughout, food and accommodation were good – although the desert camp bedding did require a sleeping bag liner. Overall, sights and sounds of Jerash, Petra and Dead Sea made this a memorable trip well organised by Exodus. Most Inspirational Moment Both Jerash and Petra were outstanding visits. It's a pity the one week schedule doesn't allow more time there - if anything, I'd drop the Aqaba element in favour of more Petra or Wadi Rum time. Thoughts on Group Leader Sammi was an excellent leader, obviously an expert in herding cats. Similarly 'Us' and the cycle team were great. Advice for Potential Travellers Get in more cycle practice than you think you'll need. Distance isn't the problem (about 40km per day average) but the heat in mid-May was (34 degrees average). Suggestions Flight arrival time after midnight with an early morning start was too tiring for most. An earlier flight or arrival a day in advance is recommended. There are lots of early morning starts and late meals on the trip so many of the group were constantly tired - in addition to the cycling.

Astounding Jordan An excellent holiday, taking in religious history, amazing scenery, ancient civilisation and making fab friends. Most Inspirational Moment All of it was inspiring. Petra was a highlight but I was just as excited by the religious history and loved the snorkelling at Aqaba. Thoughts on Group Leader Sami organised us all well and was informative on culture and history. However we did tend to get ‘dumped’ at our hotels and told dinner was at 8 but not given any info on what we could do in the meantime, which was sometimes half a day. Advice for Potential Travellers If you are a woman take long sleeved tops. I had not been to an Middle Eastern country before and the absence of women out of the main tourist areas really hit me. Suggestions This was such a fantastic trip, so much history and culture to absorb. The cycling was a bit different as a lot was downhill. As much as I enjoyed the trip if you were going for the cycling this wouldn’t be the holiday for you as it’s an extra not a main part. The cycling also felt quite rushed and I felt that as our group leader wasn’t a cyclist this affected this part of the holiday slightly negatively.

Amazing thanks to Mikhled! There were so many aspects of this trip that made it so incredible: a great group of fellow cyclists, a well planned route which ensured we saw the key sights of Jordan but mostly it was our guide Mikhled. Mikhled managed to perfectly blend being a highly professional and effective leader with being friendly and fun to be with. When things didn’t quite work out for us (not his nor Exodus’ fault) he always worked hard to find a solution. For example, on the day we visited all 1500 visitors had to be evacuated from Petra mid-afternoon due to torrential rain and flash-floods. Because of this we didn’t get to climb up the 900 steps to the monastery. The next day, when we had a few hours spare in the afternoon he arranged for those who didn’t want to return to Petra to go back to the hotel while organising a bus for the rest of us to go back to Petra to experience the incredible monastery sight! I would recommend the Petra & Wadi Rum Bike trip to anyone; it is something you will love and an experience to cherish for always. However, if you are lucky enough to have Mikhled as your guide leader you can be assured that everything will be done to optimise every second of the trip. Thank you Mikhled! My only negative comment is that Exodus is possibly growing too fast – the communication with the office team was poor. Emails getting no response until chased several times, welcoming us home while we were mid-way through the trip etc etc. Most Inspirational Moment Petra and the monastery were, of course, incredible sights. The camping in the Bedouin tents in Wadi Rum wasn't a luxury experience but was a wonderful night not to be missed. We had dinner around a camp-fire with food coming from dishes buried under the sand and cooked by the day's sun. Things like these were additional bonus aspects of the trip. Floating in the dead sea was something I'd always wanted to do but it was also moments such as cycling through a little town as the mosque's call for prayer chimed that made it so special. Thoughts on Group Leader I can't praise Mikhled enough. He made our trip so special and looked after everyone. He was efficient, highly effective and professional but also a fun member of the group. He did everything within his powers to go out of his way to make every moment the best he could. There was never a "I can't do that" - he always went out of his way to find a solution. If you can have Mikhled as your leader - get the trip booked today!! You won't regret it! Advice for Potential Travellers Two suggestions: 1) We arrived a day early so we had time to visit the Citadel and Roman temple. Sadly those who arrived on the scheduled date never got to see these sights. One solution would be to have the 4x4 ride around Wadi Rum on the evening we arrived so that we could have quick camel ride in the morning before returning to Amman early. This would give those who hadn't seen the Citadel and Roman theatre a chance to see these sights. 2) Please change the hotel in Amman. The Days Inn is pretty tired with cracked tiles and mould around the bathroom area. It may be in the centre of the new town but tourists are only interested in the old town. Please find a nice hotel near the Citadel and Roman Theatre. Everyone in our group said they'd prefer to pay another £50++ per night to stay in a nicer and better located hotel. Suggestions My view of Exodus continues to be very positive and I'm happy to recommend you to others however the administration team at Exodus is poor. Slow to respond - too many errors. Be careful you're not growing faster than your office team!

A perfect blend of culture and adventure! We have just returned from this trip and it was truly one of the best! A wonderful blend of cycling, swimming, walking and culture. Mikhled our guide was amazing and nothing was too much trouble. He is so knowledgeable on his country and culture. The cycling team were great and led us on some fabulous rides. Lots of fantastic downhill but also a fair few hills too! The views were incredible and we were well looked after. Petra is spell binding. The only day of rain was the day we went to Petra and by midday we had to be evacuated due to flash floods! However we still managed to see plenty! Some of us revisited the next afternoon when the weather was better and climbed up to the Monastery for spectacular views. Camping in the Wadi Rum was just amazing and a great way to end a magnificent trip. Most Inspirational Moment Too many to choose just one!! We revisited Petra on our free afternoon having cut our visit short the day before. We climbed the 900 steps up to the Monastery and were not disappointed. The view from the highest point was out of this world. The snorkelling in the Red Sea was also a high point. The sea was crystal clear and the coral and fish just superb. And finally camping in the Wadi Rum was just fantastic. Nothing can prepare you for the vastness of this beautiful desert. We arrived at sunset and after dinner we lay down on the sand and gazed up at the stars. In the morning we watched the sunrise! It was just awesome. We finished up with a camel ride! Definitely something to tick off the bucket list! Thoughts on Group Leader Mikhled was just great! Nothing was too much trouble and he worked tirelessly all week to ensure we had a great experience. Our accommodation at Petra was double booked and whilst we were enjoying ourselves he was beavering away arranging alternative accommodation which we thought turned out an upgrade - a superior glamping camp in the middle of nowhere! It was delightful! He is also so knowledgeable about his country and culture. He very sensitively explained Arabic, Christian and Moslem sensitivities in the area. Advice for Potential Travellers This is a great trip if you fancy combining adventure and culture. Suggestions Bring plenty of clothing for all weathers! We were unlucky to have heavy rain one day and it was chilly and overcast the next . All the rest of the trip was hot and sunny so we need hats and suncream too. It also gets pretty cold in the desert after sunset.

Superb Trip We were a private group of 9 chaps, none of us spring chickens. We went early-March, and the weather was generally warm apart from a couple of very chilly mornings. We were led there by our brilliant leader Mikhled; nothing was too much trouble for him, and he is very knowledgeable. A wonderful country, very friendly. The trip was a good mixture of biking and mini-bus transport. Highlights were Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, and Red Sea/Aqaba. Some steep cycling downhill sections and the odd walk up hills – no great surprise at our age! Accommodation fine and food generally excellent; alcohol is sometimes available, sometimes not, so you need to plan a bit in advance if you like to imbibe, as we do. Overall view – highly recommended. (One tip – we were advised to take US dollars as well as Jordanian dinar; you only need the latter in reality).

Jordan by bike This was a great trip because of the staff that were with us. The guide Anas was so accommodating and helpful, always smiling and wanting to share as much knowledge about Jordan as possible. No problem was too difficult for him to try to sort. The driver Walid was also hugely experienced and helpful. We were a very small group-3 of us and another super couple. Luckily it worked very well. There was a private group of 9 who were doing the same holiday and I presume that was how the 14 was made up. We were made to wait an hour every morning to let the private tour go first and this was probably the most annoying thing about the trip as we had to wait until 9.00 or 10.00 to leave and so had less time in the evening at our destination – a bit unfair but nothing our group had control over. Also think you should state there is really not much cycling in your brochure. And what cycling there is, is predominately downhill-and some of the downhill is very scary. Quite a few accidents between the 2 groups. We had a poor cycling guide who did not maintain a steady pace and this did not help with uphills and downhills. He seemed to care little what the group was doing, rarely looked behind and was also focusing on his training! Our guide spoke with him but I would suggest he is moved on. We had a day with an excellent cycling guide-ammar and so this guy’s failings really stood out. Most Inspirational Moment Jordan really was the most inspirational thing. It is a fantastic country to visit with so much to see. This is a holiday really jammed packed with sights. The backdrop of many of the cycles was also marvellous-great views of incredible rock formations. Nearly every day there was so much to see. Petra was hugely impressive and we had a great day there. However we stayed at Petra for 3 nights which was 1 night too long. This was also the poorest hotel and the food etc not great. Little Petra only took us at most 2 hours and it was quite a made up cycle that day-only 12 miles so we ended up with a free afternoon and another night there. Anas was great at suggesting activities for the afternoon but it was really just filling in time. We ended up in a very touristy Turkish baths which were not very nice. Luckily Anas organised a meal with a family that night and that was a superb evening. Other highlights were swimming in the Dead Sea, seeing the mosaics of Madaba and Mount Nebo and the fabulous Roman site at Jerash. The trip to Wadi Rum for the night was also wonderful. Lovely little camp in a perfect setting with a wonderful evening looking at the stars. Thoughts on Group Leader As mentioned above, Anas was a marvellous group leader. He really looked after us so well and really wanted us to have a good time. He dealt with things immediately and was very good at reporting back to us. We were a very small group but he was impressive at working out the best way for the group as a whole making sure no-one was left out. His leadership meant there was not one moment of stress to contend with! He had a great back up staff who all got on very well which also reflected well on Anas. He clearly loves his country and was very happy to share his life and customs with us. We learnt a lot from him. The cycling team who fixed our bikes were very helpful and good fun as was our driver. The only weak link was the cycling guide Josif, whose very uneven cycling pace could have endangered the group. Advice for Potential Travellers I think after the trip, that it is a good idea to consider a couple of days at the Red Sea-unfortunately this trip takes you back to Amman but if you can work it out, you can get a lift down to Aqaba and stay at the Sea-there is a short flight from Aqaba to Amman or you just do the car transfer to Amman at the end of your Red Sea adventure. Very easily arranged independently but we were very lucky that our group leader and driver helped us arrange transfers to our own hotel at the end. Suggestions Overall we had a fabulous time in a very interesting country. There are a lot of tourists but the short trips on the bike away from it all meant it was a great way to see Jordan rather than just sitting in a bus the whole time!!

Some reservations Jerash, Petra and Wadi Rum are amazing!! I’m so glad that I have visited these fantastic places. I wouldn’t recommend going in the winter. The trip notes are not fully representative about how it is. I would also probably advise to go on a walking or sightseeing tour instead as the cycling is a bit limited (lots of sitting on a bike going steeply downhill) and the bikes are not as good as those used elsewhere. Most Inspirational Moment First glimpse of the Treasury in Petra Being in the huge expanse of Wadi Rum Thoughts on Group Leader Mixed I'm afraid. Very good initially but he disconnected a bit when he started to suffer from a cold. Advice for Potential Travellers Go in the spring or autumn. Think carefully about whether the cycling tour is the best one for you Suggestions I've been on lots of fantastic Exodus trips. This wasn't the best one but it will not stop me booking with them again. Show less

Petra and Wadi Rum by bike I very much enjoyed the program. It kept us busy and engaged. Jordan has a fascinating history and spectacular scenery. It would have helped if your trip notes had been more relevant to the season. Many people were not fully prepared for the cold (which was as low as 1 degree) and the rain (there were floods). Jordan has a well documented 40 days of winter which begins somewhere around December 21st (can up to 10 days earlier) and ends early to mid February. During this time there are storms and very low temperatures. I know this as I have been to Lebanon in the winter but Dezlin was unaware of this, and when I asked her to call the guide to check the validity of the ‘packing list’ she claimed that due to ‘global warming’ the weather was unpredictable. This is not the case. It is always winter in Jordan at this time of year ! She did call the guide who confirmed that it was cold, but many in our group were not informed. Petra flooded the day after we visited. This s not unusual during the 40 days of winter. Most Inspirational Moment 1. Being in Petra with our guide on Christmas eve and Christmas day: dinner with the family, Turkish bath, free time to walk up to the sacrificial site 2. Our days and nights in the desert 3. Tour of Jeresh 4. Beach morning - cool but sunny I liked it all except the hotel on the first and last nights which is AWFUL. Why on earth would you book people into an hotel with a NIGHT CLUB in the basement ????? We arrived very late on our first night and NO ONE slept. Please change this as friends have asked me if I would recommend this trip and I have said no on this basis. People were exhausted on the first official day of the tour. Thoughts on Group Leader Our guide was good humored, knowledgeable and experienced. He knows how to manage his country and was able to navigate the general chaos. He had a great deal to manage and did very well under the circumstances. Our group was was not easy . The weather was challenging which meant that we couldn't cycle as planned, and because there are few roads in Jordan, there were limited options when change was needed ,so we ended up cycling on very busy roads with a police escort just to fill in time. Some people complained about this. They also complained that they couldn't ride ahead of the cycle guide. They didn't seem to understand that it wasn't safe to do that and seemed reluctant to accept that not all countries are safe for cyclists ( which was why the tourist police came with us everywhere we went), and that the drivers in Jordan are reckless and unused to cyclists . Advice for Potential Travellers If you go to Jordan in winter insist that EXODUS provides a seasonally relevant packing list so you are prepared for the extremes of temperature which vary from 1 degree and snow to howling gales, thick fog, rain and floods, to 17 degrees and sunny..... You will need, waterproofs, wind-proofs, thin down jackets, base-layers, winter gloves, hats, winter cycle tights, thick socks as well as shorts and swim wear. You really won't need bug spray and hot weather clothing Suggestions Several of the people on the trip had attended spinning classes and were relatively fit, however they had not done much cycling outdoors and were unused to using a range of gears on hybrid bikes. It would help to have the cycle guide instruct people in how to use the gears when they are riding up hill as this would prevent them from jamming. CHANGE THE HOTEL USED FOR THE FIRST AND LAST NIGHTS. Find somewhere quite and peaceful away from the highway and without a NIGHT CLUB in the basement :-)

Overall a very good trip This was a very well balanced trip, good cycling and we visited really good historical places of interest. We also enjoyed both the dead sea and the red sea, with enough time at each. Accommodation was good with the highlight of staying in Wadi Rum. Most Inspirational Moment Cycling to and staying in Wadi rum. Thoughts on Group Leader Mekhled was an excellent group leader. He organised the whole trip very well, everyone kept to a sometimes demanding schedule. He was knowledgeable and gave us a lot of information about historical sites culture etc. Extra things like lunchtime food was always well managed. The cycling team was also good, the leader set a comfortable pace and kept the group together, they were helpful with bike maintenance. Mekhled didn't ride a bike but was in a support van, this didn't matter much at all except at various times he'd say "it's down hill". The ride in total would be a descent but could be undulating and hard work at times, or have an uphill that you wouldn't feel in the van. The cycling team leader was better at knowing the route from a cycling perspective but tended to be quite quiet. Advice for Potential Travellers We went late November which seemed to be about right for weather/temperature. Suggestions Partly due to a delayed flight we didn't get much sleep before the 8am start on the first day. A different flight or arriving a day earlier would have helped. It also meant that the trip notes were misleading as we couldn't have done any of the suggested options on day 1. (we did stay on after the trip) We appreciated Exodus organising our additional days at the end and later transfer.

Amazing country but... This was my third cycling trip with Exodus (April 2022). As always, it is a great way to experience a country. The sight, the smells, the noises. You can’t beat it. Jordan is a must see. The cycling itself is not challenging. The rides are quite short and a couple of steep hills but that is it. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend the tour because of the guide. Who has ever heard of a tour leader not cycling!?!?! His rules for cycling (everyone must be single file – always, you can’t stop for photos, you must cycle at the same pace and with minimal distance between each cyclist) was frustrating and at times dangerous. People have their own pace and to cycle out of this especially up and down hills can be downright dangerous. It was a shame because the group were fun and the itinerary was interesting. Most Inspirational Moment Petra. Thoughts on Group Leader The group leader must be a cyclist. It is just insanity not to have someone who understands cycling leading the tour. Advice for Potential Travellers Find out who the tour leader is first on this one! Normally, the group leaders are amazing... Suggestions No Review Centre Reply from Exodus We would like to thank Michelle for her review and are glad that she found Jordan to be a worthwhile visit, though we are sorry that her experience with our tour leader was not as positive as she has come to expect with Exodus. On this trip, our groups are accompanied by a two-man cycling team, led by an expert cycling guide, as well as a tour leader, who provides expertise in the culture and history of Jordan, and we find that this setup generally gets great feedback and allows our customers to get the most out of their holiday. We are so sorry, though, that Yolanda’s leader on this occasion, back in April, was somewhat inflexible in allowing group members to cycling at their own pace. Yolanda’s leader no longer accompanies our cycling trips, and we would mention that we haven’t had similar feedback to Yolanda’s since this trip, which makes us confident that our leaders and cycling guides are providing a really enjoyable experience for each Exodus group. Brilliant Adventure I’d never done anything like this before and I absolutely loved it! The cycling is in some stunning locations across Jordan, with great roads and just the right level of difficulty for me. It’s completely different to anywhere I’ve cycled before, but Ammar (our cycling guide) made sure that we all enjoyed it and got the best out of the trip. The parts off the bike were amazing too – especially Wadi Rum and Petra! They’re both unlike anything I’ve seen before and I loved exploring them. Mekhled was a fantastic leader and was always looking out for us and always going the extra mile to make sure everyone was having a great time. Overall, I had a brilliant time and I’d recommend it to anyone!

Sand, sea and cycling Exploring Petra, snorkeling in the red sea and camping out in the desert were particular high points. Most Inspirational Moment Exploring Petra, snorkeling in the red sea and camping out in the desert were particular high points. Thoughts on Group Leader It was unusual to have a non-cycling group leader but this seems to be unique to Jordan. Mekhlid was very organised and informative but a little quiet and reserved. Advice for Potential Travellers Bring warm clothing for the cooler temperatures in Petra and at night, especially in the desert. Pack some beers and mini wine bottles for a sun downer if you like a drink because alcohol was hard to find. Suggestions This was very different to other cycling holidays we've done with Exodus because we had to have a police escort, our cycling leader wasn't our group leader and the cycling didn't take us to our final destinations. The cycling felt bolted onto the itinerary rather than an integral part. There were several long transfers by minibus. It would have been good to arrive by bike but this would involve some major changes to the itinerary.

psychotherapist Ten years ago on an Exodus holiday I asked the leader what his favorite Exodus cycling trip was. “Jordan,” he said, “to Petra and Wadi Rum”. I’d never thought of Jordan as a cycling destination, but I see now what he meant. This trip has everything: good cycling, great food, amazing historic sites (some Biblical), a dip in the Dead Sea. snorkeling in the Red Sea and the chance to learn the basics about a middle eastern country. It could be titled, “Jordan’s greatest hits by bike”. Most Inspirational Moment Coming upon the Treasury at Petra as the steep, narrow canyon entrance opened up, a stunning sight. Thoughts on Group Leader Exodus couldn't have found a better group leader than Dr. Sami. His knowledge of Jordan, its ancient history in particular, is vast, his sense of humor a delight, his English excellent (having done his PhD in Sydney) and his attention to the details of our needs impressive. Because of him, it was evident that we were being well taken care of. There were the usual wrinkles (someone's luggage didn't arrive, someone had a medical emergency, a couple had gastrointestinal distress), but Dr. Sami handled them all with obvious concern and patience, never showing the stress that he must have been under. Advice for Potential Travellers As we were advised from the start, don't drink the tap water. And pack what you can't do without (medication included) in your carry-on luggage in case your checked-through bag should go missing. Suggestions A visit to Petra belongs on everyone's "bucket list" whether you're a cyclist or not and the ancient Roman city of Jerash deserves to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Outstanding trip Outstanding combination of biking, sightseeing the most spectacular sites and “swimming “ in the Dead Sea. Excellent guide with Sami, who is a PhD, so very knowledgeable, has great stories and is lots of fun. Biking is fun and routes are more downhill that uphill. Great scenery. Saw Jarash, Madaba, Mt Nebo, floated in the Dead Sea, had a mud bath, lots of time in Petra (amazing), little Petra, Aqaba, time to Scuba dive in Aqaba while most snorkeled. Wadi Rum was amazing, dinner cooked in the sand, Bedouin style, spent the night in the Beduoin camp. In the morning toile the jeeps to see ancient petroglyphs, climb a sand dune and rock cliff, and rode camels back to Rum. Fantastic group of fellow bikers/travelers. All became good friends. Most Inspirational Moment Petra, Dead Sea and Wadi Rum. Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent. Brilliant, with good stories and funny. Advice for Potential Travellers Enjoy the best trip ever! Suggestions Best combination of activities (biking, walking around Jarash and Petra, swimming/floating in the Dead Sea, snorkeling or diving in Aqaba, walking on the desert dunes and sightseeing!
