Experience Overview
Sheltered by the Dolomites, the Prosecco Hills are surprisingly undiscovered by mass tourism, despite the ever-growing popularity of the eponymous sparkling wine. On this culture-filled adventure, we stay in a four-star hotel on the Prosecco Road, the oldest wine route in Italy, to stroll through vineyard hills, sample regional cuisine and sip bubbly. We pair that with an alternative daytrip to Venice, visiting lesser-known neighbourhoods and the workshop of a master artisan to learn more about traditional life in the floating city.

Weather Information
During March, April and May, Treviso province and the area around the Prosecco Hills warms up quickly after the normally cold winter. Temperatures rise from 8C (46F) in March to 20C (68F) on average by the end of May, although nights are always cooler. Spring is a little rainy at times, with between five and eight days of rain a month – nothing an umbrella can’t cope with. In September and October, temperatures are still very pleasant for walking, however occasional summer storms with heavy rain and strong winds do occur. Take layered clothing to adjust to the changing temperatures, and something warm for the cooler evenings.
Spending Money
For lunches not included, you should budget €15-€25 depending on whether you choose a set menu in a cafe or restaurant. Approximately €40-€50 should be enough for an evening meal including drinks.
Local taxes: many Italian cities have introduced a tourist tax for non-residents. The local administration is in charge of the tax but the amount will be collected by the accommodation provider at check-in or check-out. This fee varies depending on the hotel category, the season and number of days of stay. For this trip, please allow approximately €10 per person for the week, although small variations are possible depending on the season.
Tipping
Our local staff are paid well and fairly for their work with Exodus. Most of our clients wish to give a tip to their guides in appreciation of their help and friendliness. This, of course, is not compulsory and depends on the service received. Although optional, it is also customary and greatly appreciated to leave a tip for the drivers and the local staff. For this trip we recommend to allow approximately €15-€20 per person for the leader and €20 per person for the local staff. Tips are usually handed in the local currency to your leader at the end of the trip.

Itinerary
The trip starts in Pieve di Soligo, a small village in the heart of the Prosecco Hills, approximately 37mi (60km) north of Venice. Here, lush vineyards cover the slopes of every possible hill, and old churches, abbeys, villas and ancient castles dot the landscape. Prosecco has been produced here for centuries, but only more recently, thanks to the surge in its popularity worldwide, has the area captured a deserved spotlight. Nevertheless, relatively few tourists visit this wine region each year, making it an ideal location for a week of walking, wine tasting and cultural discovery. Depending on the group arrival time, there might be time for a quick orientation walk near our hotel. If you want to extend your adventure, consider booking additional nights in Venice. Speak to your sales representative for more information on our 'Pre-Tour', 'Post-Tour' and 'City Extension' packages.
This morning, we take a short transfer to the Soligo Hills, one of the most charming parts of the Prosecco area. From the foothills, we cross woodlands until we reach a pretty hamlet with an ancient monastery, where we can enjoy panoramic views over the farmland and villages far below. Later, we have a delicious lunch at a renowned osteria (an informal, rustic restaurant).
Today’s walk takes us to the heartland of the Prosecco Hills, namely Valdobbiadene, San Pietro di Barbozza and Santo Stefano. Most of the local winemakers are based right here, among the steep terraced hills, which are arguably the prettiest in the Veneto region. Our walk follows a mix of human-made tracks and paths twisting through the vineyards and offers spectacular views of the fertile landscape and hillside hamlets. During the walk, we can visit the Pietrovecchio winery, one of the top local Prosecco producers. After a general introduction to the winery and its history, we can sample different varieties of sparkling wines on a guided tasting. We return to the hotel in the afternoon.
We transfer to Conegliano station and catch a train to Venice for a morning tour of the floating city. Rather than jostle through the crowded attractions, we harness our expert guide’s local knowledge and explore the neighbourhoods less visited by tourists, where the true soul of Venice is found. Here we meet up-and-coming artisans keeping traditional crafts alive, stopping at the workshop of a master carpenter-artist who makes gondola oars using traditional methods and wood from the Dolomites. We then have a short ferry ride across the grand canal to end the experience with a toast: a spritz, the classic Venetian drink, and cicchetti, typical local snacks. In the afternoon, you have free time to explore the city some more and we return to the hotel in the evening.
After a short transfer, we reach the start point of today’s walk, Maser, a village on the Prosecco Road. We set off with a climb to Monte San Giorgio; the route then veers west, following one of the original frontlines used during the First World War. The conflict affected most of this area (and many other towns around the Prosecco Hills) and we see evidence and memorials to epic deeds during our walk. Our end point is the hilltop town of Asolo, known as the Pearl of the Treviso province for its beautiful setting and historic centre. On a clear day, we might be able to see the Belluno Dolomites and the Venetian Lagoon, the Adriatic bay in which Venice is situated. Enjoy free time and, on our return, we stop to admire the architecture of the UNESCO-listed Villa Barbaro, a masterpiece of Italian architect Andrea Palladio (1508-80). It is situated in the middle of a flourishing privately owned estate; we have time for an optional visit if you’d like to see inside, before returning to Pieve di Soligo for a wine-tasting at a local enoteca (wine bar).
We have a free day, allowing you to choose your own adventure. One option is to visit the lovely town of Conegliano, the other major centre of prosecco production and wine studies. Alternatively, take a daytrip to the pretty provincial capital of Treviso, restored after Second World War bombing and considered the birthplace of tiramisu. The town centre, encircled by a wall and waterways, is a maze of streets lined with arcaded walkways. Your final option is Pauda, only a short train ride away, where you can visit the Cappella degli Scrovegni, a simple chapel housing an astounding series of frescoes by Renaissance master Giotto (visits must be prebooked at least a day in advance, so please speak to your tour leader as soon as possible if you would like to take this option).
Our final walk takes us above the Prosecco Hills to Mount Cesen, a rounded, grassy mountain, and the highest in the Venetian Prealps. Rising just above the Piave River, at an altitude of 4,593ft (1,400m), it offers a stunning panorama, plus popular walking trails that cross mountain pastures and meadows, and a landscape that differs completely to the one we explored earlier in the week. On a clear day, views can stretch as far as the eastern Alps, Dolomites and Venice. In the evening, we tuck into a farewell dinner in one of the best local restaurants.
You’ve walked through one of the most picturesque wine regions in Italy. Now, however, it’s time for a final breakfast, before beginning your journey home. If you’d like to explore a little more, speak to your sales representative and arrange a longer stay in the hotel, which may feel a little like home by now.

Wonderful trip! Beautiful scenery and peaceful pathways in a historic region filled with castles, palaces, and medieval villages. Great week being immersed in everything the region has to offer – amazing food, beautiful views, fascinating history and of course prosecco! The hotel was ideally situated with restaurants nearby. Great experience and highly recommended! Most Inspirational Moment Learning how passionate the winemakers are and sampling a variety of prosecco and wines. Thoughts on Group Leader Vania De Paoli was amazing with her local knowledge, friendliness and enthusiasm! Sandra was great fun keeping the group entertained on our drives! Advice for Potential Travellers Layered clothing and good walking shoes are recommended.

Couldn't have been better A week walking in the Prosecco Hills couldn’t have been better. The walking was easy going, with picnic lunches (three of the days). We sampled the local wine and learned a lot about it too (I’d never really thought about where this lovely wine came from in Italy before). Visiting the beautiful town of Treviso, we walked by the river on a ‘rest day’. The week went far too quickly and I think most if not all of us wished it could have been longer. We had an exceptional guide, who looked after everyone so well. Most Inspirational Moment Seeing the Dolomites, with a little snow, in the distance. Being shown around a small vineyard that produces fine quality Prosecco. Walking through the vineyards. Thoughts on Group Leader We couldn't have asked for a better leader. Full of enthusiasm and always smiling, Vania took care of everyone so well. When a few in the group found it hard to get up the hill due to the heat, she was up and down, making sure that everyone was okay, giving the clearest instructions for those of us who were slightly ahead. She was very impressive in how she was able to take care of a diverse group.

Brilliant trip This was a brilliant trip. Short walks with a fair amount of up and down through rolling hills, but nothing difficult, though if it’s hot, as it was for the week I did it, it can be a bit taxing. The hotel was lovely, by the river, close to the centre of town with a variety of restaurants and bars nearby, including two just a few steps away across the rear courtyard. The programme was varied with as much emphasis on the prosecco as the walking. In fact, I have found myself describing it to friends as a wine tour with some walking attached. Most Inspirational Moment The views especially with a glass of prosecco in hand. By chance, we were a group of 10 all women which in itself was fairly inspirational as between us we had most professional bases covered and discussion was frequently lively and interesting. The prosecco dispensing machine on top of a hill was an inspired piece of kit. You'll have to go to see what I mean. Thoughts on Group Leader Vania is amazing- enthusiastic, motivational, full of fun, with excellent English. Nothing was too much trouble and she was even available on the day off to help if we needed it. Her outstanding moment for me was running back down a hill and up again in a village to get my hat which I'd left on the table in a bar, in full sunshine and heat. And her producing a bottle of prosecco from her rucksack on Monte Cesen to celebrate reaching the highest point of the walking. She also offered help after the end of the week when we'd finished the tour, when I had a problem with my hotel in Venice. Advice for Potential Travellers Walking poles are handy for some of the looser steeper sections. On the day off, it takes 20-30 minutes to get to Conegliano by bus from the main square and then there are trains to Venice and Padua. Suggestions I would have liked longer at the Villa Barbaro

Great Fun, Big challenge A stunningly gorgeous area and stimulating challenge in enjoyable company. Our group of seven was just the right size. The walks wound through villages with interesting sites, lovely woods and expansive vineyards, with some major ascents. Most Inspirational Moment The views, the views, the views! Thoughts on Group Leader Mathea was gracious, charming, helpful and obviously loved the area. He did tend to led us a tad too quickly for us to really savor the beauty of the wooded paths. Advice for Potential Travellers Ah, well. Make sure you are ready for the major ascents of 400 meters! While the trip description is "easy" and "leisurely" those ascents are significant. Poles, good boots and layered clothing are essential.

Italys Prosecco hills Lovely holiday in a good hotel central to small town. Walking through a variety of terrains. Although billed as walking in the Prosecco Hills I hadn’t realised we’d be drinking quite so much Prosecco! Most Inspirational Moment Walking through the vineyards in the sunshine, and the church with beautiful frescoes in Pieve de Soligo. Thoughts on Group Leader Mattia was a good leader. Very supportive and caring when walkers struggled by walking with them or slowly in front to pace for them. Good local knowledge. Advice for Potential Travellers Although billed as level 2, I think that’s due to the Treviso day which is a sightseeing tour then a flat walk by the river. The other 4 days are a level 3. Walking is either steep up or steep down, not a lot of on the level walking. Last day is up very high. Mattia said it would be cold, would have been better to say it would be 5 degrees. (It was 20 degrees normally). Much tougher walking and with the altitude. Beautiful walk though and great views. Take travel pills if you don’t travel well on that day as lots of hairpin bends as we climbed to near the top. But I get vertigo and I was okay on the walk and the drive up, but one of the group found the drive up and down a bit concerning. A brolly is also useful as rain is straight down and no wind. Also walking pole. Suggestions Great holiday as ever, and the wine tasting and restaurants were great. Also hadn’t expected the first and last meal to be included in package including the drink.

Fabulous trip! This was a lovely trip! We stayed in a nice hotel, and although it had basic facilities there were plenty of good restaurants nearby. The town is pretty but there isn’t much to do there if the free day is a rainy one. Plenty of towns nearby or Venice to visit though. The scenery in the hills was stunning, and the Prosecco was amazing. Most Inspirational Moment Coming across a Prosecco vending machine in the hills! Thoughts on Group Leader Vania was a great guide, knowledgeable, friendly and easy going, especially when our group had a bit too much Prosecco! Sandra was our driver for most of the week. She was such good fun and made any journey more enjoyable. Advice for Potential Travellers Enjoy! Suggestions Highly recommended

Exceded my expectations This was my first trip with Exodus and it was so good I’m ready to book my next. It all went so smoothly and the activities and people involved were wonderful. It was also my first ever solo travel experience and having other solo travelers in the group was a plus. The rest of my group was also super friendly and welcoming. Most Inspirational Moment Hard to pick. I loved riding the e-bikes on our free day and enjoying the beautiful landscapes once we would reach the top in our hikes. Thoughts on Group Leader Give Vania a raise! Vania was excellent. She was always patient, knowledgeable and energetic. She set a positive and enthusiastic tone in our group. She went above and beyond and even loaned me some of her own warn clothes when the weather got chillier so I could participate in our last hike. After speaking with other travelers who had gone on other Exodus trips, it’s clear the guide makes a huge difference so I feel very fortunate to have had such a wonderful, fun and kind leader. Advice for Potential Travellers This was at times pretty challenging physically. It’s called the Prosecco hills after all! Worth the views and Prosecco but be prepared for some climbs.

Excellent hiking and cultural trip The trip was well planned out and provided a good mix of hiking and visiting Italian cultural places. Most Inspirational Moment Visiting Venice and seeing St. Mark's palace and square. Thoughts on Group Leader Vania de Paoli - She was excellent - well organized, fun and accommodating to every level. Advice for Potential Travellers The level indicated was leisurely/moderate. I would go with moderate, as the hiking was fairly intense.

Felt like a dream Several days of leisurely walks through the hills of this unique wine growing region. Most Inspirational Moment Seeing the Pre Alps and the Dolomites for the first time. Thoughts on Group Leader Vania was a wonderful guide. Such knowledge of the area thanks to being born and living there. Advice for Potential Travellers Unwind and enjoy the slow pace of the hills life.

Wonderful Walking in Bubbly Hills A well organised group tour in a very quiet and stunning part of northern Italy. Right mix of walking, Prosecco tasting and dining in local restaurants. Most Inspirational Moment Seeing all the vineyards with the Glera grapes was beautiful. The walking was good and often went through the vineyards. Thoughts on Group Leader Our group leader Vania was wonderful. She was always mindful of each individual in the group and made sure all travellers could participate. She had a lovely sense of humour and made sure there was a bar with Prosecco at the end of most walks so we could appreciate the Prosecco Hills fully! Advice for Potential Travellers Take walking poles. The trip is described as leisurely. However, there are parts on loose stones and some walks had very steep climbs. Walking poles are essential, as some of our party tripped on some paths.

Prosecco for the WIN! What an amazing first trip to Italy! I joined a very interesting and diverse Exodus group from all walks of life. We stayed in a small Town an hour North of Venice and it was amazing – from local cultures and food to breathtaking walks in the Hills. Most Inspirational Moment The walk up Monte Cesen was the most scenic and the rolling hills in Valdobbiadene. Thoughts on Group Leader Vania was a super star - Andiamo! Advice for Potential Travellers Follow the exodus trip notes and you wont be disappointed. Suggestions No

A new appreciation for Prosecco We had the most amazing week traipsing through the Prosecco Hills. Our guide , Vania, was happy to share her wealth of knowledge of the landscape as well as Prosecco. Vania made sure we were well looked after and kept us entertained with her wonderful personality. The Hotel Conta was ideal for the trip and the staff were super friendly . I would not hesitate in recommending this trip to anyone. Most Inspirational Moment The vistas were beautiful. Thoughts on Group Leader She was the best ! Suggestions I would recommend Vania for best guide. She absolutely has the best person for guiding. A great personality with lots of energy, knowledge and sense of fun ! We could not have enjoyed her more.

Great walking, excellent refreshment, star guide! Gillian and I had a great week enjoying the walking, spectacular views, brilliant wild flowers and varied wines (both Prosecco and some very good local red wines) in the beautiful Prosecco Hills and Pre-Alps, led by the enthusiastic and ebullient Vania de Paoli. It was hotter than expected for the second half of May, making some of the unshaded uphill sections quite taxing, but Vania timed the breaks to ensure that everyone in our varied and convivial group was able (literally!) to take the walks in their stride. A very good way to get back into the swing of foreign holidays after two difficult years. Most Inspirational Moment The final day's walk in the Pre-Alps, starting at over 1000 metres, combined great views with wild narcissi, asfodel, orchids and many other spring flowers, in more comfortable temperatures than earlier in the week because of the altitude. And Vania topped it off by producing two bottles of Prosecco at the highest point! Outside the main programme, Vania also organised a wine and food tasting menu for us at the restaurant a few metres from the Hotel. Four courses and five red wines, all made within 15 km of the hotel and two of them particularly good, for Eur40 per head - exceptional value! Thoughts on Group Leader Fantastic! Nothing was too much trouble for Vania - and she was great fun with it! Advice for Potential Travellers Bring walking poles and make sure you know how to use them. The walks are not particularly long but they merit the Leisurely/Moderate grading because there is significant ascent and descent, some of it sustained and on steep and rather loose paths. Suggestions This was our third trip with Exodus and we certainly hope to do another one.

Perfect trip Good food and wine all week, and great walking, what more can you ask for? Most Inspirational Moment It was good to learn more about the different types of prosecco. Thoughts on Group Leader Vania is an excellent tour leader - you are safe in her hands, and will have a great time! Advice for Potential Travellers Do this trip. Don't eat much for lunch at the airport on the way out, you will get a generous dinner in the evening! (and that theme continues all week really …). I did use mossie repellant (just the natural citronella stuff), and I didn’t get bitten, so would recommend. Would also recommend walking poles most days, as there are some steep up/down sections on all but one of the walks. I walked to San Gallo church on the “free” day, which I would recommend for a great view. If using Google maps, aim for the nearby locanda (La Candola) rather than the church, then it wont lead you down a non-existant path! Church is just after that on the same road.

Predictive tech Technology needs to do what it is told. Most Inspirational Moment You will see my review from the other day below is grammatically incorrect. The group leader section starts with Variously obviously..... This is totally wrong. I typed Vania who was our leader. It is Vania, Vania, Vania not Variously. Word obviously decided it didn't like Vania and made something up. With all the money I have given Microsoft a refund is obviously due. Thoughts on Group Leader Vania is a star. Never met Variously. Prosecco Hills Not too heavy, not too light. Like the wines. Most Inspirational Moment Final walk provided excellent views of the hills, but every day gave something different. The free day we went to Venice, with all help necessary for the journey from Vania and Sandra (driver) Thoughts on Group Leader Various obviously loves what she does and her enthusiasm shows. Advice for Potential Travellers It was very hot for our trip in May toping 30 on one day. Be aware and have suitable clothing for the conditions. Be prepared for some steep uphill too.

Another great trip with Exodus This trip exceeded my expectations in terms of the standard of walks, places we visited and fabulous companions. Most Inspirational Moment I loved all the walking but the most inspirational was the trip to Treviso. The city was very clean fascinating and interesting. I loved the walled centre and the great guide who showed us around with lots of enthusiasm. In addition, the food stop near the fish market provided delicious lunch and tiramisu. Thoughts on Group Leader What can I say about Vania that hasn’t already been said! I chose this trip because I wanted to travel with Vania again having previously walked the Amalfi coast with a group led by her in March 2018. She is a delightful, professional, friendly and calm person with a great sense of humour, and I joked with her that she was our Mummy and we were her chicks following closely behind. Nothing seemed to phase her and she always had a smile for everyone. She is a credit to Exodus. Advice for Potential Travellers Definitely take insect repellent, even in October, as the little blighters can inflict nasty bites.
